United eye Varane

French sport daily L'Equipe claims that the newly-crowned English champions have stepped up their interest in Varane.

The 18-year-old, who has made 21 Ligue 1 appearances for the northerners but could not prevent them being relegated from the French top flight, is also believed to have several other top European clubs tracking him.

United have sent scouts to watch Varane play at the Stade Felix Bollaert this season, while Paris Saint-Germain are also interested in signing the teenage prospect.

However, L'Equipe reports that Varane, who can also play in midfield, would not be interested in sitting on the bench at a new club, even if it were at Old Trafford.
