St Etienne and Bordeaux share spoils

St Etienne and Bordeaux played out a 1-1 draw as both sides denied the other the chance to go level on points with Ligue 1 leaders Marseille.
Ricky van Wolfswinkel opened the scoring for hosts St Etienne at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard only to see Tiago Ilori equalise for Bordeaux before half-time.
Bordeaux could have snatched all three points at the death, but the referee waved away strong appeals for a penalty after Nicolas Maurice-Belay went to ground when through one-on-one with Stephane Ruffier.
That would have been harsh on St Etienne, who had enjoyed the better of the 90 minutes, Bordeaux having to settle for opportunities on the break.
Les Verts took the lead on 31 minutes when Van Wolfswinkel broke a personal 13-month goal drought with a tidy volley.
Max Gradel then hit the post but Bordeaux were level soon after, Ilori bundling the ball across the line from close range.
The result leaves the two sides level, on 14 points and two behind leaders Marseille. Bordeaux claim second due to their superior goal difference.
St Etienne play away at Marseille on Sunday.
