The 36-year-old aimed a kick at a fan following a disagreement before the Europa League tie against Vitória de Guimarães and he was immediately sent off.
On Friday it was announced by Marseille his contract had been terminated 'by mutual consent' and he would leave the club immediately.
He was also suspended by UEFA from all European competitions until June 30, as well as being handed a fine of €10,000
He will remain suspended should he sign for a club who is still in European competition.
"Today, there is sadness. For Patrice Evra first, who obviously understood all the consequences of his action and who will no longer be able to exercise his passion at Olympique de Marseille," read the statement from Jacques-Henri Eyraud, the Marseille president.
"For Marseille fans then, who are stigmatized because of the irresponsible behaviour of a handful of them.
"For the institution finally, whose reputation is tainted while it has exemplary behaviours of all one of the essential bases of its recovery project.
"Despite this incident, we are more than ever determined to demonstrate on and off the field that we are driven by the highest individual and collective demands."
