United are fifth in the Premier League, trailing fourth-placed Manchester City by six points going into Saturday's trip to relegation-threatened Sunderland.
"It is not a question for me I think," the Dutchman told reporters on Friday when asked if a failure to finish in the top four would cost him his job.
"It is a question of the board of Manchester United, you have to put that question to them. I have a contract for three years and you know that," he added.
Former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has been widely linked with the United job in media reports, but Van Gaal, who has accused journalists of inventing the story, does not mind that the club have not publicly denied the rumours.
"I have said many times that not all the media, but a lot of media, is inventing stories and you don't have to answer on invented stories," he added.
"I can only say that I have spoken with Ed Woodward and I cannot imagine that they have spoken with each other. I think that if they speak with another manager, they would tell me because our relationship is like that," Van Gaal said.
"I not only have a strong relationship with Ed, but also with the Glazers. And that is why I am annoyed with all the publicity. I have been 'sacked' three times and now it is about negotiations starting with Mourinho."

United, who are fifth in the Premier League, travel to face second-from-bottom Sunderland on Saturday.

OUR VIEW

Louis van Gaal's Old Trafford exit seems increasingly likely, even if the Dutchman is finding it difficult to accept.
Failure to secure a top four spot, particularly given the amount of money that was splashed by United last summer, would surely seal the deal.
Mourinho is waiting in the wings and, whether negotiations with Jose Mourinho have commenced or not, Van Gaal looks like a dead man walking.
