The 23-year-old winger left Old Trafford for the Ligue 1 club in January following a disappointing 18 months at Old Trafford where he scored just seven times, with all of those goals coming in his first campaign.
He arrived amid much hype having finished the previous season with PSV Eindhoven as the Eredivisie's top scorer but, wearing United's fabled number seven shirt, he failed to deliver and started just once under Jose Mourinho in his second term before departing.
"I think looking back...it's not necessary right now," Depay said of his time with United.
"We have to look forward. I think I have spoken before in interviews, said what I had to say and now it's on me to focus on what's ahead of me.
"I'm very excited to be back, to play tomorrow and I think it will be a good match. I'm very excited with what I can show to the people."
United inserted a buy-back option when they offloaded him to Lyon for a fee in the region of 25 million euros (£21.7m).
In an amicable parting, Mourinho highlighted how Depay was "potentially a very good player" and fulfilling that promise remains the issue as e ven at OL he is not a regular.
"Of course I want to play more minutes but the coach has to make decisions and I will accept them," Depay added.
"We have a team that tracks back a lot, the wingers have to defend and I'm an attacking player. Sometimes it takes more energy to defend and then when we have the ball we have to attack and get forward 50 metres, that takes a lot of energy. That's been the trouble I think for me in the last months.
"I'm in a good shape, feeling fit and I have the confidence. Now it's on me to show that I have to play every game.
"We have a lot of quality, of course when you don't play well you will lose your place. That counts for everybody - because I came to France with big expectations and a big price tag...that doesn't mean I have to play every game. That's the reality."
That will have been music to the ears of his manager Bruno Genesio, who subscribes to the same theory about his role.
"He's a player with tremendous potential; he's capable of individually brilliant moments," Genesio said.
"However, we very much work as a team, group and unit and maybe sometimes he needs to just bring a little bit more in that respect."
Everton are yet to win in the Europa League group stage and have just two Premier League victories, y et Genesio is worried his men could feel the backlash.
"Everton are a team that is feeling really wounded," he said. "They have a desire, almost a need, to win and find confidence."
