De Gea looked certain to leave United in the closing stages of the summer transfer window, as Real finally made a formal approach following a long-running pursuit of the player.
Both clubs thought they had completed the deal prior to the closing of the transfer window but it subsequently transpired that Real had filed the relevant paperwork two minutes late – meaning De Gea had to return to Old Trafford as the move collapsed.
Sidelined at Old Trafford prior to the failed move, the Spain international subsequently returned to the first team and signed a new contract at United, and insists he has now put the saga to the back of his mind.
"I am a guy who likes to let the bad things and difficult times behind," De Gea said.
"I spent a lot of tough times and I know what it is. We must move forward, working equally and always strong.”
De Gea is focused on continuing to improve for United.
"It's a learning process that gives football hard moments but that make you mature and grow,” he added.
"These are things that you learn in the world of football.
"You have to keep working and try to improve in every training session."
