Scunthorpe manager Mark Robins hailed the return of Luke Williams after his late winner gave the Iron a 2-1 victory at Bury.
The fit-again forward, who signed from Middlesbrough in the summer, won the penalty from which Paddy Madden gave the Iron a 12th-minute lead.
Leon Clarke equalised in the 50th minute but missed a host of chances before Williams made him pay, curling in an 86th-minute free-kick for his first Scunthorpe goal as the Iron bounced back from two straight defeats.
Robins said: "Their keeper had a good evening in terms of shot-stopping. I think he may have slipped for the second goal but the free-kick was outstanding.
"And Luke's been practising those, it was no fluke. He scored one in pre-season and when you lose the likes of Luke on the opening day for three months, it's always going to have an impact.
"It's just great to have him back, I thought he was excellent tonight.
"But the game was too open, I'm sure David Flitcroft will say the same."
There were plenty of chances aside from the goals, with Danny Rose hitting a post for Bury while both goalkeepers were busy.
Bury boss David Flitcroft said: "I'm not happy with dominating the game and not winning it. I'm frustrated.
"I was happy with about 80 per cent of what we did but we also need to look at the negatives of conceding two goals.
"In terms of chances, that was probably the most we have created at home, even more than the 4-0 win against Wigan.
"Leon had five or six chances that, on another day, he'd put away. It was just one of those nights.
"Their keeper was fantastic but Daniel Bachmann has pulled off three very good saves himself."
