It’s the announcement players dread to hear over the tannoy: ‘is there a qualified assistant referee in the stadium?’
Are they up to the challenge? Will they be impartial?
But there were no such worries during Arsenal Ladies’ game against Reading on Thursday night, when Premier League referee Michael Oliver duly volunteered from the stands.
Olivier was a spectator in the crowd for the clash at Meadow Park, which his wife Lucy was refereeing.
With Oliver as linesman, the match was completed as Arsenal ran out 2-1 winners over Reading.
