Two goals from Joe Pigott and another by Myles Weston earned the three-time runners-up victory at the Checkatrade.com Stadium.
Brown said: "Tonight was all about attitude; you have to bring your attitude to the party and it wasn`t easy at times.
"There were moments in the second half when we took our foot off the gas for 15 or 20 minutes, and it is during those periods that teams can come back at you."
Brown had special praise for Weston, who was pushed into a more attacking role and responded with his first goal for 13 months.
"Myles hasn`t been in the front line for a while and it is his feeling that it is his best position," Brown said.
"We had a heart-to-heart recently and he cares about his game and the club. He asked about going out on loan, but I felt that is not an option at the moment.
"There were five or six League Two clubs interested in him, but I feel this performance and the goal he scored will do him a lot of good."
Crawley`s defeat leaves them without a win in seven home games so far this season, during which time they have only scored one goal.
Manager Mark Yates was encouraged by their second-half display and is confident they will soon turn a corner.
He said: "In the last three games I feel we've been a lot better. We are looking forward to winning at home for our sanity and our own benefit.
"It`s not all about saying, it's about doing it. It will be a big three points."
Yates was disappointed his men were unable to score when they had chances to get back at Southend and added: "If we`d taken our chances in the second half it could have been a different game.
"Things are not quite going for us. Every mistake we are making is getting punished, but our squad is coming together.
"We have added to it recently, bringing in a couple more players and it was always going to take time. Now we want to see the team stand up and be counted."
