Midfielder Joao Moutinho celebrated his 100th top-flight game with Sporting by scoring the first goal in a 3-1 win over Estrela Amadora in the Portuguese Premier League.
Porto, in action on Sunday at Madeira Island's Maritimo, top the standings with 49 points from 20 matches, followed by Benfica, who host Uniao Leiria on Monday, on 45.
Sporting, with their first win after three successive draws, remained third on 43 points, two behind Benfica and one match more.
The 20-year-old midfielder put Sporting in front after 39 minutes with a shot from inside box and striker Yannick Djalo, who replaced suspended Brazilian Liedson, scored twice in two minutes (48, 50) to put a Sporting victory beyond doubt.
Ghana striker Moses Sakyi scored the consolation goal for Estrela five minutes before the time.
