Southampton and Spurs shared the points after Graziano Pelle’s two goals cancelled out Erik Lamela and Nacer Chadli’s efforts for Spurs.
Neither side were able to keep control of the ball for sustained periods of time, resulting in slightly desperate defending throughout. A goal had appeared inevitable for both sides, and it was Southampton who took the lead.
A defensive mistake from Ryan Mason put Ben Davies under pressure, and Pelle stole in to poke the ball past Hugo Lloris in goal. The equaliser came when Eric Dier was afforded too much time on the right, and his cross was met by Lamela to steer in at the near post.
In the second half, Southampton went ahead when Shane Long curled in a first time cross for Pelle to thunder past Lloris, but Chadli had an equaliser when he held off Maya Yoshida to finish from a tight angle. Despite further chances for both side, neither side could find a winner.

The ball runs to Ward-Prowse, who appears to be tripped, and the ball runs to Mason, who overruns the ball, slips, and is tackled by Pelle. TALKING POINT
What did Erik Lamela score with? The ball missed Harry Kane at the near post and then appeared to strike either Lamela’s chest or forearm. It’s not clear what exactly happened, and Spurs can count themselves lucky. Similarly, Pelle probably found Davies in the lead up to the goal, and they benefitted from the referee’s generosity in allowing the goal to stand.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Graziano Pelle (Southampton): After a dry spell, Pelle is back in goalscoring form at a vital time for Southampton. Chasing a Champions League spell, Pelle intervened twice to keep Spurs at bay, one of their direct rivals, and also added clever approach play to his two goals.
