Marouane Fellaini managed to cause uproar in Manchester United's final game of the season against Hull City with a horrific challenge on Paul McShane.
The Belgian, who has earned a reputation for borderline challenges during his time in the Premier League, was surrounded by incensed Hull players after what seemed a vicious stamp on the defender.
Fellaini was rightly shown the red card for the stamp by referee Lee Probert, and now fairly gruesome photos have emerged revealing the extent of the large gash above McShane’s knee.
The United midfielder, who had only been on the pitch for 18 minutes when he was given the straight red card, inflicted the wound on McShane after clumsily bringing his leg down after the ball had gone.
McShane had to have numerous stitches to patch up his leg, while also having a bandage fitted to his head, but courageously managed to continue.
Fellaini’s moment of madness provided a shameful end to what has been an encouraging season for the 27-year-old who has established himself in Louis van Gaal’s midfield.
He has bounced back from a difficult first season at Old Trafford to score six goals in this campaign after having joined United under David Moyes’s leadership in September 2013.
It was Fellaini’s second red card for United after he was also dismissed against Real Sociedad in the Champions League a month after joining the club from Everton.
Despite Fellaini’s dismissal reducing United to 10 men, Hull were unable to capitalise as the match petered out into a disappointing goalless draw as Steve Bruce’s side were relegated to the Championship.
