John Carver’s reign as the permanent manager of Newcastle got off to the best possible start as his side secured a comfortable 3-0 win over Hull City.
Remy Cabella netted the game’s first goal just minutes before the end of a truly forgettable first half, before Sammy Ameobi’s memorable strike doubled Newcastle’s lead after the break. And Yoan Gouffran rounded off a truly miserable day for Steve Bruce’s side with a third late on.
The two sides went into the clash at the KC Stadium desperate for a win for different reasons. After a huge dip in form, Hull had plummeted down the Premier League table and found themselves in the bottom three prior to kick-off, whilst Newcastle boss Carver needed the three points to appease the fans who were angered at his full-time appointment following Alan Pardew’s departure.
Understandably both sides looked nervous in the opening exchanges, obviously looking not to give their opponents an inch – which made for a rather dull spectacle.
Moussa Sissoko had an early effort on goal for the visitors, but it took until the 41st minute for the game to come alive as Newcastle took the lead.
Hull full-back Andrew Robertson was guilty of giving the ball away deep in his own half, allowing for Cabella to capitalise on the loose ball to cut inside on his left foot and lash an unstoppable shot past the helpless McGregor from 20 yards.
Hull thought they had restored parity seconds before the half-time whistle as Ahmed Elmohamady appeared to have headed the home side level, but referee Phil Dowd pulled play back, booking the Egyptian for handball.
Hull returned from the break in search for a goal, but it was the visitors that looked the more energised of the two.
Newcastle added two more in the second 45 minutes; Ameobi driving home from 30 yards after the hosts had needlessly given the ball away before Gouffran capitalised on atrocious defending to fortuitously find the back of the net, sealing the three points for the Magpies.

KEY MOMENTS
41’ - GOAL!! Hull 0-1 Newcastle. Cabella nets for the visitors. Robertson sloppily gives the ball away deep inside his own half, and the Frenchman seizes on the loose ball before cutting onto his left foot and smashing the ball beyond McGregor from 20 yards.
45+2’ - DISALLOWED! Hull think they have equalised as Elmohamady appears to have headed a late goal from a Ramirez free-kick, but play is brought back and the defender booked for a handball.
50’ - GOAL!! Hull 0-2 Newcastle. Sammy Ameobi doubles his side's lead. Hull give the ball away in their own half and Colback is on to it in a flash. He looks to get an attack moving quickly, switching it to Ameobi, who drives forward before unleashing an unstoppable shot into the far corner.
64’ - SO CLOSE! Hull almost pull one back following fantastic work by Robertson down the left. The full-back bursts down the left before a clever reverse ball allows Ramirez to get to the byline. The forward pulls the ball back across the face of the goal but somehow Hernandez is unable to turn it home!
78’ - GOAL! Hull 0-3 Newcastle. Gouffran scores Newcastle's third. Hull have been so very, very poor today. The Frenchman picks the ball up wide on the right and is allowed to cut inside time and time again, reaching the edge of the penalty area before shooting on goal. It takes a wicked deflection past McGregor, but Hull don't deserve anything from this.

KEY STATS
Newcastle claim their first win in 2015 in their fifth match (all comps) and end a run of nine matches without a win with John Carver stepping in for Alan Pardew (suspended / left club).
Hull have now failed to score in 11 of their last 15 PL matches.
Hull’s total of 19 points is the club’s worst at this stage of a top flight season (previous worst was 20 in 2009/10).
TALKING POINT
Can Hull avoid relegation? Judging on this performance, you’d have to say no. Steve Bruce’s side were utterly atrocious against Newcastle, way short of what is expected of a Premier League team. Fortunately for Bruce and his Hull players, there are a number of very poor sides in the league this season. Regardless, they will know that if they continue to play in the same manner, then points are going to be very hard to come by for the rest of the season.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Remy Cabella (Newcastle): The Frenchman was at his busy best once again, constantly giving the Hull back-line something to think about. Whenever he picked up the ball, he looked like he was going to make things happen. A well-taken strike topped a great day for Cabella.
