Aaron Cresswell’s first goal for West Ham gave them a 1-0 win over 10-man Newcastle at Upton Park, as the Hammers leap-frogged the Magpies and moved into fifth place in the Premier League table.
Newcastle, who went into the game on the back of five consecutive Premier League wins, had one of their best openings inside the first two minutes, as Ayoze Perez turned sharply in the area but shot just wide of the far post.
The Magpies were pressing West Ham well, forcing the home side into long balls towards former Newcastle striker Andy Carroll, without creating any chances themselves.
Any goal was likely to be a scrappy one and so it proved, as Cheikhou Kouyate’s scuffed shot from just outside the area fell into Aaron Cresswell’s path, allowing the left-back to fire in for his first Hammers goal with 55 minutes gone.
Newcastle’s task was then made harder by a minute of madness from Moussa Sissoko, who was booked for kicking the ball away and then sent-off for shoving Andy Carroll to the floor 45 seconds later.
KEY MOMENTS
2' – CHANCE: Close for Newcastle! Perez is fed by Gouffran from the right-hand side of the box and the Spaniard turns very sharply before firing just wide of Adrian's goal.
18' - BOOKING: Mike Williamson gets the first booking of the day, as he trips Jarvis just inside the Newcastle half. With Andy Carroll to contend with for another 70 minutes, a booking is not what the former Watford man needed.
35' - OUCH: Tomkins gets the ball away bravely just before team-mate Carroll volleys him in the face. The defender looks like he'll be fine, though.
55' – GOAL! West Ham 1-0 Newcastle United. Well where did that come from? A mishit shot by Kouyate falls to Cresswell in the box and the left-back fires in for his first goal for the Hammers.
74' – YELLOW CARD: Sissoko is booked for kicking the ball away after conceding a free-kick. Not a happy boy.
76' – RED CARD! Now it's red! One minute after his first booking, the French international is off having shoved Carroll to the floor. Alan Pardew is very, very unimpressed.

KEY STATS
This was only a third win in 18 matches for West Ham against Newcastle.
The defeat ended Newcastle's run of five consecutive wins in the Premier League.
Captain Mark Noble set a new Premier League appearances record for West Ham, as he played for the club for the 205th time in the top-flight.
TALKING POINT
What was Moussa Sissoko thinking? With Newcastle just one goal down with 15 minutes to go, the Frenchman was sent off for two moments of extreme petulance in 45 seconds. Having kicked the ball away he then shoved Andy Carroll to the floor, giving Mike Dean no choice but to send him off.
MAN OF THE MATCH
Aaron Cresswell (West Ham): Cresswell’s high-energy play was rewarded in a match of limited quality, as Cheikhou Kouyate’s scuffed shot fell straight to him as he ran into the area. The full-back fired home confidently for his first West Ham goal, lifting the Hammers up to fifth.
