Wilshere suffered a left ankle injury during Arsenal’s 2-1 home defeat to Manchester United at the weekend after being tackled by Paddy McNair.
Speaking ahead of Wednesday night’s Champions League fixture against Borussia Dortmund, a cautious Arsene Wenger only said the midfielder “will be out for the next few games”.
However, well-connected journalists at the Guardian and Daily Mirror are now reporting that Wilshere may well need ankle ligament surgery.
If so, Arsenal would be without the 22-year-old for as much as three months.
Such a long recuperation period would be another big setback for a player who has consistently struggled with his fitness.
Most seriously, he missed 17 months of football after breaking his right ankle in 2011.
Wilshere has this season impressed at the base of England’s new diamond formation although his impact with Arsenal has been less consistent.
