THE LATEST
Tom Cleverley’s chances of leaving Manchester United before the end of the transfer window next week are rapidly increasing amid numerous transfer reports.
Yesterday the Englishman, whose performances have been subject to savage criticism online over the last two years, was linked with a move to another Premier League club, Aston Villa.
However a fresh report on Friday morning suggests Cleverley could be moving abroad. Sky Sports claim La Liga side Valencia have made an enquiry.
OUR VIEW
So, Cleverley’s claim that his style of play would work better in Spanish football – in an interview which earned him almost as much flak as his recent appearances on the pitch for United – could well be put to the test.
Truth be told, such a move would surely be better than one to Villa, who have problems of their own to sort out.
Cleverley came to prominence under Sir Alex Ferguson back when United’s reputation and system were intact. He fell away when the club employing him did. It’s arguable he merely needs solid foundations on which to rebuild.
Besides, leaving the country (and its very harsh online critics) would in itself offer him a fresh start. Even if he joins neither Villa nor Valencia, surely the midfielder should find a new club in the next few days and start over.
THE PAPERS’ VIEW
Simon Jones, Daily Mail: “Manchester United are not desperate to lose Cleverley but the player accepts he could become a peripheral figure and if he opts to sitting out his contract then United will be forced to try and sell now.
“His former club Bradford have been braced all summer for a windfall as they are due a percentage sell-on from any deal and were aware this month's talks were a make or break time for the England international.
“Cleverley was even made captain against Roma during United's pre-season tour but accepts his time at United could be at an end if United succeed in recruiting more midfielders before Monday.”
