Welbeck went in for a challenge on Bacary Sagna, and while there seemed to be little contact - Welbeck didn't even come off his feet - the striker pulled up in clear pain.
He got to his feet and for a while it seemed that he might be able to play on; but with the problem clearly serious he was substituted off moments and walked, obviously dejected, down the tunnel.
Given Welbeck's injury history England fans will be worried that he may not be back in time to play a part at Euro 2016.
And Arsene Wenger said he was concerned, speaking after the 2-2 draw at Etihad Stadium.
"I’m worried,” he said. "We’ll try and be optimistic and wait for the scan tomorrow. The first signs, the medical people told me it looks like it is a lateral meniscus – and I hope they are wrong.
"But Danny looks down, so he knows. He’s not a guy who wants to off, so I’m a bit worried.”
Welbeck missed the first six months of the season due to a knee injury, returning in February.
Should Welbeck miss out on Euro 2016 then Roy Hodgson will have to bring in another player to team-up with likely strikers Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy.
It could be good news for Daniel Sturridge, Andy Carroll or even Jermain Defoe, Sunderland's veteran having been in great form as the Black Cats have scrapped hard to try and avoid relegation.
