Liverpool's new keeper Loris Karius: Is he actually any good?
Updated 24/05/2016 at 16:17 GMT
Liverpool have signed Mainz goalkeeper Loris Karius for £4.7million after a medical on Tuesday. But will he prove a better buy than error-prone Simon Mignolet?
Karius, 22, who recently finished second only to Manuel Neuer in a players' poll over who is the best goalkeeper in the Bundesliga, has agreed personal terms with Jurgen Klopp's team.
The signing was confirmed on Tuesday evening, with Karius set to provide strong competition for Simon Mignolet in the Reds' squad.
That competition for the number one jersey will not begin until several weeks into the season, however: Karius is young enough to be part of Germany's U21 squad for the Olympic Games in Rio during the second half of August.
He should have no trouble integrating into English football when he does arrive: Karius spent a couple of years as a member of Manchester City's academy.
VIEW FROM GERMANY: IS KARIUS REALLY THAT GOOD?
Johannes Mittermeier of Eurosport Germany has some good news for Liverpool fans.
"Karius represents a great choice for Liverpool. Surely one of the best Bundesliga keepers, still young at 22 but already quite experienced with 91 matches in the German league," he said.
"He has no obvious weaknesses. I can’t remember one single mistake in last year’s campaign (at least no decisive one), while Mainz finished in 6th place - a tremendous achievement for the club.
"Moreover, Karius knows England well since he spent two years with Manchester City, he’s self-confident and able to adapt.
"I don’t want to praise him too much cause you may be surprised why Karius hasn’t played for the German national team yet!
"To sum it up: Given that Mignolet is their number one right now, the signing of Karius will be a clear step forward for Liverpool."
