Man Utd latest: Giggs ready to cut ties; Neville linked with role; Jose's call revealed
Updated 24/05/2016 at 07:58 GMT
Manchester United finally confirmed the sacking of Louis van Gaal late on Monday night but, officially at least, they have given no indication as to what will follow.
It is apparent that Jose Mourinho has been promised the job but United have not yet confirmed the appointment of the former Chelsea manager and his backroom team – leaving ample room for speculation about what that could entail.
The biggest unknown at the moment is the future of Ryan Giggs, who worked as an assistant to David Moyes and Louis van Gaal but faces a more uncertain position with Mourinho incoming.
Here’s what the media are saying about the latest developments at Old Trafford.
Sky Sports – Mourinho could keep Giggs, but not as assistant
If Giggs is to stay at Old Trafford and work with Mourinho he may have to do so with a reduced role, given Mourinho will bring in trusted assistants Rui Faria and Silvino Louro.
Jose Mourinho is prepared to find a place for Ryan Giggs on his Manchester United coaching staff, but not in the role of assistant manager, according to Sky sources. Mourinho will take his trusted deputy Rui Faria to Old Trafford as assistant manager though, meaning an effective demotion for Giggs if he agrees to stay at the club. However, Mourinho holds the former winger's achievements at United in high regard and is keen to find a role for him to extend his 29-year association with the Red Devils.
The Sun – Neville could return in Mourinho’s Old Trafford revolution
A new name is thrown into the equation with reports that Mourinho is very friendly with Gary Neville and could be keen to bring him in as part of the new regime, with Neville bringing extensive know-how about the club. Another former United man, Brian Kidd, is also under consideration as he prepares to leave Manchester City after working under Manuel Pellegrini.
Brian Kidd and Gary Neville are shock contenders to become part of Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United revolution. The Red Devils want Kidd to ditch rivals Manchester City and become new boss Mourinho’s right-hand man following Louis van Gaal’s sacking yesterday. And the Portuguese also plans to sound out Neville about joining his backroom team.
The Telegraph – Giggs ready to cut Old Trafford ties
The possibility of Giggs leaving United and ending his 28-year association with the club is very real, according to the Telegraph, after he was overlooked for the top job.
Ryan Giggs was giving serious consideration to ending his 28-year association with Manchester United on Monday night after being overlooked for the manager’s job in the wake of the sacking of Louis van Gaal, who expressed acute disappointment at his dismissal, writes James Ducker. Jose Mourinho will be appointed as Van Gaal’s successor on a three-year deal worth about £36 million – possibly as early as Tuesday – but Giggs was agonising over whether to accept a role on the former Chelsea manager’s coaching staff as he came to terms with the disappointment of being denied his dream job for a second time.
The Mirror – Mourinho called Van Gaal to tell him it was over
The debate over who knew what and when – and just how badly United have handled the Van Gaal departure – has been a prominent thread of the reaction to the change in regime and the Mirror have an intriguing tale claiming that Mourinho actually contacted his old friend to let him know what was happening.
Louis van Gaal knew he was finished at Manchester United in a shock phone call... from his successor Jose Mourinho, writes David McDonnell. Van Gaal was finally sacked on Monday after two years in charge, with former Chelsea boss Mourinho set to replace him on a three-year deal. But it has emerged Mourinho rang the Dutchman, with whom he worked at Barcelona, himself to admit United had sounded him out about the Old Trafford job.
The Times – Van Gaal would have left United for nothing
Speaking of United’s handling of the situation, it might have cost them around £5 million…
Louis van Gaal would have walked away from Manchester United for nothing if he felt that the club had handled his dismissal better. Van Gaal has waived compensation deals in the past and he was originally willing to do so at United, but it is understood that he was so annoyed about the manner of his dismissal that he demanded the payoff in full.
