Madrid-based newspaper Marca says United’s proposed signing of Monaco forward Anthony Martial, for a fee of anything between £36m and £58m, has “unclogged the situation”, with Madrid hopeful they could a deal done before the Spanish deadline of 11pm.
Later on Monday respected Spanish journalist Guillem Balague took to social media to report that deal was all but concluded after Costa Rica goalkeeper Navas agreed to the United move.
The overall cost to Madrid is said to stand at €40m after the Spanish giants agreed to pay €25m in cash with Navas valued at €15m.
De Gea has not played for United yet this season after Louis van Gaal decided Real Madrid's interest had not left him in the right frame of mind to represent the club.
Sergio Romero has started the season as No. 1 but was unconvincing in Sunday's loss to Swansea. Spain international Victor Valdes is out of favour under Van Gaal.
Former Real Madrid goalkeeper Iker Casillas had his say on the saga on Monday:
We hope that it turns out how he wants and that he’s happy. He’s a fantastic goalkeeper. His professional situation isn’t how he would like but let’s hope he can resolve it soon and that it all goes well for him.
