Georginio Wijnaldum was the hero as Newcastle stunned Jurgen Klopp's resurgent Liverpool to lift themselves above north east rivals Sunderland and ease the pressure on beleaguered boss Steve McClaren.
The Dutchman, who scored four goals in Newcastle's last Premier League home win, forced a sliding Martin Skrtel to put the ball into his own net on 69 minutes.
Klopp elected to start Christian Benteke up front ahead of Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi, who scored five of Liverpool's six goals against Southampton on Wednesday, and the former Aston Villa man was neutralised by the determined combination of Fabricio Coloccini and Chancel Mbemba.
Both strikers were introduced in the second half as the visitors chased an equaliser but instead it was Wijnaldum who landed the telling blow in injury time, racing onto a Moussa Sissoko pass and coolly dinking the ball over the onrushing Simon Mignolet to condemn Klopp to his first away defeat as Liverpool boss.

KEY MOMENTS

22' - CHANCE: Moreno's in-swinging delivery drops just in front of Elliot and Benteke reacts first, but the Belgian can only scoop a shot over the bar from close range.
45+1' - CHANCE: Dangerous moment for Newcastle as Ibe cuts in from the left and curls a shot just over with Elliot at full stretch.
51' - CHANCE: Lucas gives the ball away and Newcastle work the ball to Sissoko on the right, but Wijnaldum can't direct the Frenchman's low cross on target at the near post.
69' - GOAL! Newcastle 1-0 Liverpool. He's been the outstanding player on the pitch and now Wijnaldum has given his side a vital lead, controlling a Sissoko cross, jinking past Lovren and firing a shot that cannons off Skrtel and into the net. Possibly an own goal but the Dutchman made it happen.

75' - CHANCE: Lallana slides Sturridge through with a wonderful pass but the former Chelsea man skews a right-footed shot well wide from the angle. In other news, Divock Origi has replaced Jordon Ibe in Liverpool's final substitution.
79' - DISALLOWED: Milner picks out Moreno with a brilliant crossfield pass and the Spaniard sends a looping volley over Elliot into the net, only for his joy to be curtailed by the linseman's flag. Replays show he was on. Controversial.
89' - CHANCE: Another bad miss for Lovren. Newcastle clear Moreno's initial corner but Liverpool keep the ball and the Croatian meets his left-back's pinpoint cross with a firm contact, but his effort is straight at Elliot.
90+3' - GOAL! Newcastle 2-0 Liverpool. And that is that! Newcastle counter with Sissoko and the Frenchman slides a pass through to Wijnaldum, who coolly dinks the ball over the onrushing Mignolet. St James' Park erupts.

KEY STATS

All seven of Georginio Wijnaldum's Premier League goals for Newcastle have come at St James' Park.
Martin Skrtel now has as many Premier League own goals (7) as Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher. Only Richard Dunne (10) has more.

TALKING POINT

Where there is Wijnaldum, there is a way. There were more than a few raised eyebrows in the summer when Newcastle managed to secure the signing of Georginio Wijnaldum - captain of PSV's title-winning team last season - ahead of several more illustrious and successful European sides, and while Steve McClaren's men have been largely underwhelming in the first four months of the Premier League, the gifted Dutchman has lived up to his lofty billing.
Sunday's game was scrappy for long periods, the result of two teams far more focused on pressing than passing, but almost every infrequent flash of quality at St James' Park came from Wijnaldum. He jinked away from tackles, moved into dangerous positions, gave team-mates opportunities to cause problems and seized the game's two decisive moments for himself. It was an individual performance every bit as good as his four-goal haul in Newcastle's last Premier League home win against Norwich City, six weeks ago. The fact that Liverpool mustered just one shot on target is likely to please McClaren most but, in Wijnaldum and the mercurial Sissoko, he knows he possesses two players with the quality and chemistry to dig Newcastle out of their current crisis - and save his job in the process.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Georginio Wijnaldum (Newcastle): His passing and movement was intelligent throughout and he made the difference when it mattered, forcing Martin Skrtel to turn the ball into his own net and then capitalising on Liverpool's late desperation to surge upfield and put the game beyond them with a beautiful dink. His personal haul of seven Premier League goals in 15 games in a team as dysfunctional as this is more than impressive.
