Arsenal didn't want to meet PSG's price for Cavani, while West Brom have a problem with Berahino. That and more from Wednesday's papers.

Arsenal wouldn't pay for Cavani - Arsenal could have had Edinson Cavani, but The Mirror claim that they weren't willing to pay the £50 million that Paris Saint-Germain wanted for the striker. The Gunners enquired about Cavani, but were turned off by his price because the Uruguayan is 28 years old so he would have little sell-on value. Instead, they let the transfer deadline pass without a single outfield player signed.
Paper Round's view - Arsenal aren't a club that will overpay to get a man they don't value extremely highly and haven made a priority. Cavani was never that man, nor was Karim Benzema for that matter. Clubs that are looser with their spending may have looked at the way Cavani could improve the team and shell out, but the Gunners were always unlikely to do so at PSG's price.
Spurs offered £25m for Berahino - Saido Berahino is not going to Tottenham and he is very upset about it. Specifically, he's upset with West Brom chairman Jeremy Peace. He took to Twitter, where he claimed that he "will never play (for) Jeremy Peace." Now there is question about whether he'll go on strike. The Mail understand that Spurs offered £5m up front, with £20m more to be paid out over the next five years.
Paper Round's view - Peace's approach to Berahino has been combative from the start and there was no way this was going to end well. He can say that Spurs unsettled Berahino, but Peace is the one who took things public and Berahino made it clear that he wanted to leave West Brom at the beginning of summer. It's not so much that West Brom had to sell Berahino just because he wanted out - only £5m up front isn't a great offer - but Peace turned an uncomfortable situation outright terrible.
No clubs bid for Austin in last four weeks - Queens Park Rangers did not receive a single firm bid for Charlie Austin in the last four weeks, according to The Guardian. Austin wanted to join a club in the Premier League, but QPR stood firm in demanding £15m for the striker and no club wanted to meet that valuation. Crystal Palace bid £12m, but that was a month ago and QPR dismissed it out of hand.
Paper Round's view - It's a shame that Austin will spend the season (or at least the first half of the season) in the Championship after having such a fine campaign in the top flight last year. He has four goals in five matches for QPR so far and will probably keep up at that pace. This will all be worth it if Austin gets QPR back up to the Premier League, but if not then they'll have made a mess of this situation because Austin's contract expires next summer and he wants to make sure he's playing in the top flight by then.
Everton rejected Naismith bid - Norwich tried to sign Steven Naismith, but The Echo understand that Everton rejected the Canaries' £8m bid for the forward. The Toffees believe Naismith is vital to their team and told the Canaries that the Scot was not for sale after he signed a new three-year contract with Everton in December.
Paper Round's view - Everton do need Naismith and £8m isn't nearly enough money for them to weaken their squad. That's especially true on deadline day, when the club wouldn't have had time to buy a replacement. If Naismith was going to be out of contract soon or wanted to leave, the Toffees may have had to think things through, but that wasn't the case so they rightly rejected the bid without thinking twice.
Berbatov could still sign for Villa - Aston Villa didn't sign Dimitar Berbatov by Tuesday's transfer deadline, but the Mail say that the club could still make a move for the striker. Berbatov has been speaking with Villa about signing with the club and Tim Sherwood was interested in adding him to his strike force, but the two sides failed to come to an agreement. Because Berbatov is out of contract, he can sign with a club after the deadline, though, and Villa have not ended their interest.
Paper Round's view - Sherwood has wanted to add a striker all summer. First he wanted Emmanuel Adebayor, but that fell apart so then it was Berbatov. At face, it wouldn't appear as if Villa need another frontman, but we'll see how the next few weeks play out. If Sherwood still thinks he needs another body up front, he can always come back to the Bulgarian.
