Manchester United are going to make another attempt to keep David De Gea. That and more from Thursday's papers.

United will make new contract offer to De Gea - Manchester United aren't giving up on keeping David De Gea. The Mirror understand that the Red Devils will offer the goalkeeper a new contract in October that would pay De Gea more than Real Madrid were set to offer him. United don't expect De Gea to sign the contract and will instead leave the club on a free transfer after the season, but they want to at least make an effort. Real Madrid will not match United's wages, but a £10 million signing-on fee could tempt him.
Paper Round's view - It would be astonishing if De Gea opted to stay at United. He made it clear that he wants to return to Spain and playing for Real Madrid is too much to turn down. Even if Real won't pay the wages that United will, that signing-on fee is substantial and makes up much of the difference. Despite it all, United are right to take a chance and offer him a contract. They have nothing to lose by doing so.

Victor Wanyama has been linked to Tottenham in recent days

Wanyama to reject Southampton deal - Victor Wanyama is not ready to commit his future to Southampton. The Mail claim that the midfielder will reject a new five-year contract from the club and will not consider extending his deal with the Saints until at least next summer. Wanyama's contract with the Saints expires in two years so he holds some bit of leverage and with considerable interest from other clubs, he will see out this season and reconsider his future at Southampton then.
Paper Round's view - Tottenham tried to sign Wanyama and could come back for him in January. At that point, if Southampton hasn't gotten the midfielder to sign a new contract by then they might have to consider selling him or risk losing him on the cheap. There could also be new clubs interested in signing him then or the interest could lead the Saints to offering the midfielder an even bigger contract. At this point, the situation is extremely fluid, but Wanyama has some leverage because of his contract situation and it makes sense for him to not sign a new deal and keep that leverage.

Adebayor

Adebayor asked for too much money, say West Ham - Emmanuel Adebayor wanted a £5 million payoff to join West Ham, according to The Mirror. Adebayor is out of the Tottenham team and his contract expires after the season so they were looking to get him out of the squad. West Ham wanted to take him and Spurs were going to let him leave on a free transfer, but he wanted a payment to leave and Hammers owner David Gold said that Adebayor priced himself out of the move.
Paper Round's view - Adebayor had several opportunities to leave Spurs. Aston Villa agreed to take him on at his wages, but Adebayor scrapped it. He could have gone to West Ham, but he wanted a payment to do it. In the end, it came down to him not really wanting to leave and his priority not being to play football again. That's fine and wanting to cash £100,000 cheques every week for another year doesn't make him a bad person, but it's not a surprise that he killed a deal.

Lewis Grabban of Norwich

Bournemouth just missed out on Grabban - Bournemouth had a deal for Lewis Grabban called off by Norwich City at the last moment, per The Bournemouth Echo. After negotiations with Norwich, the Cherries thought that a bid of £7m would get the deal done, however the Canaries killed the deal five minutes before the window shut. As a result, Bournemouth had to call off a deal to sell one of their own strikers.
Paper Round's view - Bournemouth spent most of the summer trying to add to their striker corps. They felt they needed to improve up front and chased strikers from the beginning of the summer all the way up to five minutes before the deadline, apparently. Grabban would have been a nice addition to the club, but they weren't desperate to wrap him up. They have serviceable forwards and should be able to get by without him.
United won't let Johnstone go on loan - Sam Johnstone asked Manchester United to let him go out on loan, but The Mail report that the Red Devils refuse to let him leave. De Gea didn't leave the club, nor did Victor Valdes, and Sergio Romero came into the team so Johnstone has found himself well down the pecking order. Several Championship clubs wanted to take him on loan and Man United's refusal led his agent to hit out at the club. "Sam just wants to play football but Manchester United are holding him back and not even playing him," he said.
Paper Round's view - Johnstone isn't going to play for United this season. He couldn't even get a look in the first six matches of the season when De Gea and Valdes were held out so with the two of them staying at Old Trafford, Johnstone is left to watch. Why United won't let him go is a mystery because if they want Johnstone to continue developing then he needs to play more. He showed his quality on loan at Preston North End last season and should be going out again. Hopefully the club realise that and let Johnstone continue his development.
