Phil Neville has claimed there must be something “fundamentally wrong” with Luke Shaw after the defender was publicly criticised by Jose Mourinho.

Shaw has played just three times for United since November and has featured only 16 times in all competitions since the start of the season.
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho questioned the full-back’s focus and commitment in the media over the last week, saying: “It's difficult for him to be on the bench because I cannot compare him with Ashley Young, with [Matteo] Darmian, with [Daley] Blind.
“I cannot compare the way he trains, the way he way he commits, the focus, the ambition. He is a long way behind.”
Former United player Neville, who was part of the scouting process which saw Shaw leave Southampton for Old Trafford in a £27million deal, believes the defender needs to change his mentality if he is to have a future with the Red Devils.

He said: “I know he's suffered an injury but there must be something fundamentally wrong if the manager is questioning your attitude, training performances, desire.
“That from a 21-year-old with the world at your feet, you think maybe this is the last throw of the dice from Jose to try and get something out of Luke Shaw that he knows is in there.
“When Luke Shaw signed for Manchester United I was probably involved in the process of scouting him and recommending him as a player because I thought he would be a Manchester United left back for the next 10 years.
“You would think he would be a sensational player, but he just hasn't done it.”
