The deal was confirmed by the Portuguese club as they tweeted their thanks to the forward.
And Leicester soon followed with a tweet of their own, with Slimani signing a five-year deal.
Slimani said:
To join a team like Leicester City is a huge honour and I can’t wait to get started. I’ve always wanted to play my football in the Premier League and to get the opportunity to do that with the reigning champions was something I simply could not turn down.
Slimani, 28, joins fellow Algeria international Riyad Mahrez in the champions' ranks and is the second star forward to join the club this summer after the £15m signing of Ahmed Musa, who was previous Leicester's record signing.
He spent three years with Sporting after signing from CR Belouizdad, scoring 57 goals in 109 games in total.

With Jamie Vardy and Shinji Okazaki also in the squad, Claudio Ranieri now possesses four strong options in attack as Leicester mount a Champions League campaign as well as the defence of their Premier League title.
However, Sporting are believed to have vetoed a possible move to Leicester for midfielder Adrien Silva.
