Manchester United have completed the signing of Anthony Martial from Monaco on a four-year deal, the Premier League club said on Tuesday
But who is Anthony Martial, and what are United getting?
We asked Ilyes Ramdani from our French office to fill us in…

So, what can you tell us about Martial?

Martial is one of the most talented young French forwards. He is a young striker, who is also able to play out wide. He graduated from the Olympique Lyonnais academy and has been well known for years because of his impressive stats at youth level.

Tell us more…

Martial scored 32 goals in 21 matches in the U17-Championship. For France’s youth teams he scored nine goals in 17 matches for the U16s, nine goals in 13 matches for the U17s and three goals in four matches for the U18s.

No wonder teams took notice, but how did Monaco get hold of him?

These stats convinced many European clubs to try to sign him at a very young age. Monaco led the race and profited from the competition for places at Lyon (mainly with Alexandre Lacazette, another great talent). They signed him on a three-year contract for a fee of €5 million (£3.7m) in 2013 as he was only 17 at the time.

What kind of player is he?

I'm not fond of comparisons but he has many attributes which make him look like Thierry Henry. The fact he plays for Monaco, his ability to play on the wing and as a striker, his skills in one-on-one situations, holding the ball up, his speed...

Is he ready for the step up to a club like United?

Last week Didier Deschamps called him up for the France first team. He is probably ready to play at a big club. He could improve United with his dribbling skills and pace. But he still has to improve his consistency and his ability with his back to goal. For example, he is not a very good header of the ball and would not be comfortable in a kick-and-rush team. However, his pace will perfectly suit Schweinsteiger or Mata's passes.

Is he worth £36m?

The price is obviously excessive and I thought United would buy a pure striker, rather than a forward who can also play wide. Martial is a big talent, but he is not a centre-forward. Still, he's only 19 and Louis van Gaal has the ability to transform him into a central striker.
