Joel Matip withdrawn from Liverpool squad over eligibility, record-hunting Wayne Rooney on bench

Matip, 25, last represented Cameroon in 2015 and has retired from international football but the Cameroon Football Federation have not indicated to Liverpool whether the former Schalke man can represent Liverpool during the Africa Cup of Nations.

“Liverpool Football Club can confirm Joel Matip has been withdrawn from selection for today's Premier League fixture at Manchester United as the club continues to seek clarity from FIFA ‎as to the player's eligibility,” read a statement on the club’s website.

With Nathaniel Clyne injured, Trent Alexander-Arnold starts at right-back. Philippe Coutinho is on the bench as he continues his return from injury.

For Manchester United, top scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic returns to the starting XI for the visit of Liverpool.
