Sunderland will step up the search to find a new manager after Sam Allardyce departed for the England manager's post after only nine months in the job.
The Premier League club released a short statement to confirm Allardyce's departure, but did not make any other comment.
It is understood Sunderland have reached agreement with the Football Association over compensation for Allardyce, who had one year on his contract at the Stadium of Light.
"Sunderland AFC confirms the departure of Sam Allardyce, who takes up the position of England manager with immediate effect," said Sunderland.
"The focus of everyone at Sunderland AFC now is on moving forward quickly and decisively, with the appointment of the club’s new manager to be confirmed at the earliest opportunity."
Allardyce succeed Dick Advocaat last October, but managed to keep Sunderland in the Premier League after winning a relegation battle involving North East rivals Newcastle and Norwich.
Former Manchester United manager David Moyes is favourite for the post while Steve Bruce could be a candidate having departed newly promoted Hull on Friday afternoon.
