A 94th-minute goal from Winston Reid gave West Ham a second league win at the London Stadium, and condemned Sunderland to yet another defeat.
In a game bereft of quality and chances, the Hammers started brightly but soon faded.
Dimitri Payet struck the post with a low shot from the edge of the box on 26 minutes, which for a long time looked like it would be the closest either side would come to breaking the deadlock, while Simone Zaza also went close with an overhead kick that went just wide.
Sunderland’s best chance came just after the break when a defensive mix-up saw Wahbi Khazri through one-on-one, but he shot straight at Adrian.
David Moyes looked content to settle for a point late on, bringing on Paddy McNair and Billy Jones for a pair of attackers, but invited pressure onto his side that they ultimately couldn’t resist.
With the game looking like it had fizzled out, a short corner in the last minute of stoppage time found its way to Reid 20 yards out and his low shot went through a number of bodies to nestle into the far corner.

TALKING POINT

Is this the end for Sunderland? The Black Cats usually start the season badly before managing to turn it around in the nick of time, but this time it feels different. The only side in the division without a win and again lacking any cutting edge today, it’s hard to see where the goals and points are going to come from. Jermain Defoe didn't have a clear-cut chance all match, cutting a frustrated figure, and looking at the bench it was hard to see where Moyes could turn to change things. And all this while they're yet to keep a clean sheet.

MAN OF THE MATCH

Winston Reid (West Ham). The home defenders limited Sunderland to only one good chance, while at the other end Reid showed composure that many of his team-mates had lacked when scoring the winner. In a game of little quality, he proved the difference. He won't score every weak but back-to-back clean sheets suggest he's helping get the defence back on track.

KEY MOMENTS

26' - CLOSE! Payet sends a defender the wrong way before even receiving the ball, then sees his shot crash off the post with Pickford beaten.
45+1’ – CLOSE! Zaza goes for goal with an overhead kick, striking it well but just wide.
46’ – SAVE! Khazri is through one-on-one after a defensive mix-up but shoots straight at Adrian.
90+3' - GOAL! West Ham take a short corner and work the ball to Reid, whose left-foot shot 20 yards goes through a crowd of players and nestles into the bottom corner.
