Two defensive mistakes saw Manchester United lose 2-1 to Manchester City at Old Trafford, the 14th Premier League win in a row for Pep Guardiola's team.
Paul Pogba’s absence from the 175th Manchester Derby was notable from the outset, as the visitors completely dominated the midfield. Fernandinho and Kevin De Bruyne frequently had the run of the middle third, with United sitting deep with numbers. It meant Mourinho’s plans to attack on the break – as he did in last weekend’s victory over Arsenal – appeared to have been thwarted by City’s dominance in the centre of the park.
The breakthrough came moments before half-time, when Leroy Sane’s powerful close-range shot was tipped over by David De Gea. The resultant corner was poorly defended by United, who could only watch as David Silva converted the opener in the six-yard box, virtually unopposed.
Two minutes later, the equaliser came from another defensive error: both Nicolas Otamendi and Fabian Delph misjudged an Ashley Young cross, which bobbled into Marcus Rashford’s path. The 20-year-old made no mistake in converting his sixth goal in all competitions.

Otamendi made amends for his error shortly after the break when he scored the winner in acrobatic style. Romelu Lukaku’s poor attempt to clear a Davis Silva free kick fell to the Argentine to volley his fourth of the season from close range.
The home side’s failure to clear their lines from another set piece will no doubt infuriate manager Jose Mourinho.
United were presented with a golden chance to equalise when Lukaku and Juan Mata were offered close-range shots, but Ederson denied them with an incredible double save.
City went 11 points clear of their closest titles rivals, who lost in the league for the first time at Old Trafford since September 2016. On that day, it was also a 2-1 victory for Manchester City.

TALKING POINT: Is the title race over?

United are now eleven points behind their neighbours. Could Guardiola’s side realistically drop that many points in the 22 remaining games?

MAN OF THE MATCH: Kevin De Bruyne

The Belgian may have been presented with ample space in midfield to operate, but was integral to almost every City attack. Yet another fine performance.

PLAYER RATINGS

KEY MOMENTS

10 - Sterling advances into the area and picks out Jesus with a wonderful pass. The Brazilian is one-on-one with the 'keeper, but he attempts a flick back to a team-mate instead! A poor decision and a great chance squandered.

43 - CHANCE: Delph delivers a wonderful cross to Sane, whose shot from an acute angle on the right is parried over by De Gea.

43 - GOAL! De Bruyne's outswinging corner comes in and falls loose to Silva, who has an easy tap-in! The Spaniard had an awful lot of space to turn that one in!

45+2’ - GOAL! City make a huge mess at the back and Rashord equalises! Otamendi misses a cross coming into the box and Delph completely fails to clear it. Rashord pounces on the double error!

54 - GOAL! Otamendi profits from another defensive mistake! Lukaku attempts to clear a Silva free kick very poorly and Otamendi converts with an acrobatic volley. United's failure to clear their lines there was shocking.
