The former England captain appeared at Stockport Magistrates' Court after being arrested in the early hours of September 1 when driving a woman's black Volkswagen Beetle in Wilmslow, Cheshire, at 2am.
Rooney was charged with driving while over the legal limit and released on bail.
On Monday, after entering his plea, he was handed the driving ban plus a 12-month community order and assigned 100 hours of unpaid work.
Rooney's lawyer said he "expresses his remorse for a terrible error of judgement" and added it is "likely he will be fined by Everton, probably two weeks' salary" – which amounts to around £300,000.
The 31-year-old also released a statement, which read: "Following today's court hearing I want to publicly apologise for my unforgivable lack of judgement in driving while over the legal limit. It was completely wrong.
I have already said sorry to my family, my manager and chairman and everyone at Everton FC. Now I want to apologise to all the fans and everyone else who has followed and supported me throughout my career.
"Of course I accept the sentence of the court and hope that I can make some amends through my community service."
Rooney rejoined Everton from Manchester United over the summer and on Sunday was in the Toffees team which lost 4-0 to United at Old Trafford.
