And he hailed goalkeeper Artur Krysiak after the Pole was decisive in the penalty shootout.
When spot-kicks beckoned after more than 90 goalless minutes, the former Birmingham player proved the hero as he kept out two efforts to book Yeovil's place in the area quarter-finals.
Sturrock said: "I thought we were poor in the first half. We were a bit jittery and we didn't get our passing going.
"As the second half unfolded, we started to get up the park a bit. We were up around their box several times.
"This year (goalkeeping coach Chris) Weale has worked hard with him (Krysiak). We've tried to iron out some of his mistakes and he's done okay.
"There's a couple of areas which I'd like to strengthen but like anyone else the budget's the budget.
"If the finance comes along then there would definitely be two areas on the football pitch I would sort out."
Coventry manager Tony Mowbray admitted he was disappointed to be out of the competition.
He said: "I thought we were dominant in the first half. We controlled the game and we had enough opportunities to win in the first half.
"We didn't take them and I thought they grew into the game. Yeovil stuck at it and got stronger as the game went on.
"Our keeper made a few decent saves but ultimately that's the second cup competition we've gone out on penalties this year so it's a bit frustrating for us."
