The former Newcastle United centre-back earned a recall to Les Bleus thanks to his performances in Serie A and the Champions League.
However, he sustained a muscular injury during a friendly against Albania on Friday.
According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the initial tests showed a lesion to the femoral bicep in his right leg.
That type of injury would require around three weeks on the sidelines, but Roma want to perform more tests before announcing the outcome.
The club already has injury problems in defence with Leandro Castan and Federico Balzaretti barely featuring this season.
Douglas Maicon and Davide Astori are also carrying persistent niggles.
