Arsenal confirmed the widely-anticipated news via their Twitter account, adding: "The Poland international joins AS Roma for the opportunity of regular first-team football this term. Everyone at Arsenal would like to wish Wojciech well for his time in Italy."
Szczesny lost his place in Arsene Wenger's starting XI to David Ospina last season and has been pushed further down the pecking order by Petr Cech's arrival from Chelsea.
He reportedly fell out with Wenger last season, amid reports that he had been caught smoking the showers after a game at Southampton.
The 25-year-old will compete for first-team football at Roma with Italian veteran Morgan De Sanctis, 38.
Calciomercato.com reports that the Giallorossi will pay a €500,000 loan fee with the option to buy fixed at €5m.
Szczesny arrived in the Italian capital on Monday.
