But there have been some notable clashes between the sides.
Here are five to remember:
Newcastle Utd 3 Brighton and Hove Albion 1 (Div Two, May 1984)
Newcastle fans turned out in force on the final day of the season to pay homage to their idol Kevin Keegan who ended his illustrious playing career with the club.
With promotion to the top flight already assured there was a celebratory atmosphere in St James's Park as captain Keegan performed the coin toss with Brighton skipper Jimmy Case, his former Liverpool team mate.
Keegan made sure the home faithful were rewarded when he scored Newcastle's opening goal, his 28th of the season on what was his 500th Football League appearance.
Chris Waddle scored Newcastle's second while Peter Beardsley capped a fairytale afternoon with an audacious chip.

Newcastle 0 Brighton 1 (Div Two, March 1992)
Keegan had returned to Newcastle as manager with the club in danger of dropping into the third tier of English football.
Five games into his reign, after an encouraging start in which they had taken seven points from 12, things went flat with a home defeat by bottom club Brighton who moved above Newcastle on goal difference. Mark Gall scored the winner.
The match was also noteworthy for Brighton's garish red and white striped shirts and shorts. Brighton eventually went down while Keegan's Newcastle survived.

Newcastle 0 Brighton 1 (FA Cup third round, Jan 1983)
Not a tie that immediately caught the eye when the draw was made but it began a magical journey for Brighton who went all the way to the FA Cup final under manager Jimmy Melia.
After the first match at Brighton was drawn 1-1, the replay in the north east saw Peter Ward score the winning goal for the top flight strugglers against their then second-tier opponents.
Brighton went on to beat Manchester City and Liverpool on the way to the final where they lost to Manchester United 4-0 in a replay after the first match was drawn 2-2. Brighton were also relegated in the same season.

Brighton 2 Newcastle 0 (FA Cup third round, Jan 2013)
Second-tier Brighton sprung a surprise when they beat 10-man Newcastle who lost for the seventh time in eight matches to put pressure on manager Alan Pardew.
Andrea Orlandi scored a superb opener after half an hour for Guy Poyet's team and Newcastle suffered a further setback when Shola Amoebi was sent off for a second bookable offence.
Substitute Will Hoskins sealed victory late on meaning Newcastle had still failed to win in 16 away games in all competitions.
- -
Brighton 1 Newcastle 2 (Championship, Feb 2017)
With both sides on course for automatic promotion to the Premier League this clash felt like a title decider.
The Seagulls looked set to open a four-point lead over Newcastle as they held on to Glenn Murray's penalty.
But Mohamed Diame and Ayoze Perez scored in the last 10 minutes to earn Newcastle a dramatic win. (Reporting by Martyn Herman; Editing by Toby Davis)
