Tommy Wright admitted his frustration at St Johnstone's habit of falling behind in games after they came from behind once again to draw 1-1 against Dundee.
The Perth side stretched their unbeaten run to six matches despite losing a third-minute goal in the Tayside derby.
Midfielder David Wotherspoon levelled Kane Hemmings' opener but they failed to take advantage of the chance to squeeze past Aberdeen into third place.
After comeback wins against Kilmarnock and Dundee United they had to settle for a point against the Dark Blues and Wright said: "The unbeaten run keeps going and we are still in a good position.
"If anything I am disappointed with the start we made. We let them get a good foothold in the game.
"We made too many mistakes and didn't move the ball quick enough.
"But we had a good spell and got ourselves back into the game. The game fizzled out a bit because the pitch cut up after the amount of rain on it.
"I think both teams struggled to get any quality play. The positive is the resilience we are showing but it is definitely a negative going behind.
"We can't keep doing it. We have to start better at home. There were too many individual mistakes but they showed character to get back in it."
After easing back into the top six, Dundee manager Paul Hartley was delighted to have picked up points at Tynecastle and McDiarmid Park in successive weeks.
A fifth draw in six outings was enough to edge them above Hamilton in the table and Hartley said: "We have drawn a lot of games but we're not losing them.
"We're not too far away, we have good players and a good work ethic.
"The performances in the last two matches have been excellent.
"Hearts and St Johnstone were the form teams in the league and we have put in two very good performances.
"We're not far away, we put out a very attack-minded line-up against St Johnstone.
"The first half was open and end-to-end at times.
"I was very pleased with the way we started the game, we were really at it from the first minute and the goal we scored was great.
"Kane Hemmings and Greg Stewart have a good understanding and I thought they both played really well."
Spanish defender Julen Etxaberguren gave Dundee fans a late injury scare, but Hartley said: "Julen came off at the end but it was just cramp. He's not played a lot of football in the last few months."
