The Railwaymen, bottom of League One, fought back from 2-0 down thanks to goals from Ryan Colclough, Marcus Haber and substitute Ryan Lowe.
The latter's winner came three minutes into stoppage time.
"I thought we played well in the first half and created some really good chances," said Davis.
"It was cruel to be behind at half-time and then they scored again, from a corner, which I was really disappointed about.
"We made a couple of changes and tried different things, to get more from our players, and I was really pleased to come back from two-down.
"We don't do that very often and you've got to enjoy these days.
"We showed terrific spirit and fight and if we keep showing it, hopefully we can pick up another good result at the weekend.
"The lads were at it, all the way through. I can't fault anything they did, in terms of effort, determination and willingness to work hard.
"They scrapped for second balls and showed quality when it mattered.
"I'm getting everything I can out of the players and I'm delighted."
Hosts Colchester, having suffered three straight defeats, and six losses in their last eight matches, looked to be on course for a timely victory thanks to goals either side of half-time from Callum Harriott and George Moncur.
They opened the scoring after 40 minutes thanks to a wonderful goal from Harriott.
The wide man cut in from the right and let fly with an unstoppable long-range effort that went in via the underside of the bar.
Colchester's second then came right at the start of the second half, after 48 minutes.
A corner caused chaos in the Crewe box and when Tom Eastman's shot was blocked on the line by Billy Bingham, Moncur pounced to make it 2-0.
Crewe's comeback started soon after, ensuring a lively second half.
They gave themselves hope through Colclough, who volleyed home from ten yards, after Oliver Turton's cross was knocked into his path by Haber.
And the visitors made it all-square 11 minutes from time, when Colclough fed substitute Lowe and his pull-back from the right was turned in by Haber.
That paved the way for Lowe's late heroics, chipping Colchester keeper Jamie Jones from 20 yards.
U's boss Tony Humes was crestfallen afterwards and said: "Words can't describe how we gave that game away and I'm sure everyone feels the same way.
"Our decision-making was poor and the whole team went on the back foot.
"Rather than being two-up and confident, we became nervy.
"Tonight will be tough for the players and it'll be hard to pick them up, but that's what we've got to do.
"We have to turn this around and we'll set about doing that in the same way we do every day - by trying to create a positive environment,to lift the players."
The U's boss also commented on the home crowd, who turned on him at the end with chants of "Humes out".
And of his own future, he added: "I've probably worked as hard as the players tonight, encouraging them, trying to make them feel confident and trying to get them through the game.
"Obviously it wasn't enough.
"Whether you win, lose or draw, you always look at yourself to see what more you can do.
"That's all you can and I know I can do more.
"You can always do more, but by the tone of what was around tonight a lot of people don't agree with that.
"That's their opinion.
"The players needed an encouraging environment and it seems people were quite happy to see them fail."
