The former Manchester United striker slotted home in the first half against City from Dominic Calvert-Lewin's assist, for his second goal of the season for the Toffees.
And the 31-year-old was delighted afterwards, even trolling the fans of his opponents on Twitter, with a picture of his celebrations and the caption: "Always nice to see a few familiar faces."
After the match, Rooney said: "To do it today in such an important game for us, so early in the season, we've got tough games coming up, it was a sweet moment and I am sure the red half of Manchester will have enjoyed that one as well.
And when Rooney was asked about how sweet it was to score in the blue half of Manchester once more, he joked: "What, again?”
"Well, it is not bad for someone who is not fit any more and can't get about the pitch," he told Sky Sports. "No, I have always put a shift in for the team, I've always done that, and tonight was no different.

'Last year I didn't play enough'

Rooney also said his sharpness is returning after he did not feature enough times for United last season.
"The manager has made it clear he wants to play me in any of the attacking positions," he continued. I've done that all of my career. The thing for me is to play.
"Last year I didn't feel I played enough games and if you're not playing those games, you're not getting the match fitness and I paid the price for that.
"I've had a good pre-season, played a lot of games over the last few weeks and I feel good. That's vital for me if I'm going to play in these different positions."
And when asked about a possible England return, Rooney said: "I am sure I will speak to Gareth Southgate over the next few days and we'll have a conversation and see what happens."
"We'll see. I am focusing on Everton."
