The Lionesses were knocked out by Japan in the semi-finals last week after an unfortunate own goal from Laura Bassett. However, they beat Germany in the third-place play-off and arrived back at Heathrow airport on Monday.
Welcoming the squad’s return, the FA tweeted: “England Women went back to being mothers, partners, sisters and daughters on Monday morning, but over the past month they have taken on another title – heroes.”
But the post was swiftly criticised as “patronising”, “condescending” and “out of touch”.
It was later deleted.
