FULL TIME: Luxembourg 1 Netherlands 3
Not a performance the Dutch can be proud of tonight and few positives to take but the three points.
There will be three added minutes here.
- OffBart RamselaarNetherlands
- OnMarten de RoonNetherlands
De Roon on for Ramselaar
That is actually an important goal as it takes the Dutch above Sweden on goal difference.
Hardly been vintage stuff from the Dutch, but if you can win 3-1 playing badly, that says something.
- GoalMemphis DepayNetherlands
GOAL NETHERLANDS! And that seals it. A wonderful free kick from Memphis Depay and he grabs his second goal.
- OffStefano BensiLuxembourg
- OnVincent ThillLuxembourg
Bensi off for Thill
TEN MINUTES RENMAINING: Only a goal in this one but Luxembourg look so tired that Netherlands can just play out the clock. Still not enough attacking intent.
Slow, laborious, laboured passing with no real intent tonight. The Dutch trying to play out the rest of this match.
If the Netherlands take all three points, they will tie Sweden on 7 points. A tricky trip to Bulgaria awaits next, though.
SAVE! Schon again called into action to tip over Berghuis’ shot. The keeper has had a great game.
- OffDaniel Da MotaLuxembourg
- OnKevin KergerLuxembourg
Kerger comes on for Da Mota
Arjen Robben's game ended with injury.
Blind picks out Depay again but it’s good defending again to prevent Netherlands extending their lead.
The news is that Robben suffered a hamstring injury.
Free kick taken from Depay but it’s a really poor one and sails long, out for a goal kick.
There now look a lot of tired players in white shirts. Ramselaar comes off to get cleaned off. A clash has given him a bloody face.
Netherlands force a dangerous free kick. Depay takes and it cannons back off the wall.
POSSESSION: Luxembourg 32%- 68% Netherlands
Dangerous run and shot from Depay that flies over past the left post from a tight angle.
Luxembourg have given Bulgaria a scare and equalised against Belarus so you still can’t count them out as Dost is flagged offside.
- Yellow cardDaley BlindNetherlands
A cynical challenge from Daley Blind and now he goes into the book.
- GoalMemphis DepayNetherlands
GOAL NETHERLANDS! And it’s the Manchester United pair of Blind and Depay that combine. Great header from Depay.
Poor challenge from Bruma on Bensi and he’s lucky to escape without a yellow.
A draw surely takes away any chance the Netherlands have of winning this group. They must find something.
SHOTS: Luxembourg 5-10 Netherlands
Excellent defending from Da Mota again to clear Blind’s dangerous cross out for a corner.
Difficult to see how the Dutch will garner any creativity without Robben on the pitch. He was the one bright spark.
- Yellow cardStefano BensiLuxembourg
Bensi booked for a poor challenge.
With Robben off, Daley Blind now had the captain’s armband. Wesley Sneijder also off.
SAVE! Berghuis immediately finds Depay with a raking pass. Blind crosses to Klaassen and it’s a great save from Schon!
- OffArjen RobbenNetherlands
- OnSteven BerghuisNetherlands
- OffWesley SneijderNetherlands
- OnMemphis DepayNetherlands
Memphis Depay on.
- 2nd Half
Two substitutions for the Dutch at the start of this second half.
Back underway here at a still rainy Stade Josy Barthel and the Netherlands really need to up their game otherwise World Cup qualification could be slipping away.
- End of 1st Half
HALF TIME: Luxembourg 1 Netherlands 1
The Dutch exposed as Luxembourg break and have a man over but it’s a poor pass and ther chance is gone. Suddenly, Netherlands looking wobbly again.
That was Chanot’s second international goal. There will be two additional minutes.
- Goal by penaltyMaxime ChanotLuxembourg
GOAL LUXEMBOURG! Chanot steps up for the hosts and scores. Stekelenburg rooted to the spot.
PENALTY LUXEMBOURG! Da Mota bursts into the box and its taken down by Brenet. Clumsy challenge.
Now Dost gets in at the near post but just can’t wrap his foot around it with enough power. Should have done better, probably.
A great run to the near post from Turpel and it takes a great tackle from Van Dijk to keep the scores level. Luxembourg still dangerous.
This game certainly needed a goal and that may just settle things down for the Dutch. This game really needed a goal, although it may have been slightly fortunate.
- GoalArjen RobbenNetherlands
GOAL NETHERLANDS! Wijnaldum plays in Robben and it’s a typically composed finish from Robben. Looked like he may have been offside.
A very drab period of this match and the Dutch just can’t make the breakthrough. Credit to Schon but they’ve only carved out two clear cut chances.
A reminder of how the group is looking.
SAVE! Schon saves from Robben and Klaassen puts the rebound over the bar!
Luxembourg showing that they’re still dangerous and must be underestimated at their peril. A shot on target apiece now.
SAVE! Turpel gets some power in his strike but Stekelenburg is down to make a decent save. That was awkward.
Now Sneijder fouled and Anthony Taylor’s patience must be wearing thin.
- OffLaurent JansLuxembourg
- OnMathias JänischLuxembourg
Jans is off for Luxembourg,
Another foul by Mutsch, on Wijnaldum again. Anthony Taylor gives him what is surely a final warning.
Still 70% possession for the Dutch but they have carved out few opportunities great defending to stop Robben in the box once again.
Jans hobbles off and that could force Luxembourg into a change.
Jans looks to have twisted his ankle slightly whilst trying to stop Robben. He’s down and receiving treatment.
Jans does well to keep the ball in and get a cross in but it lacks power and is easy for Stekelenburg.
Luxembourg holding their own at the moment, just that one fierce drive from Robben well saved by Schon.
Mutsch again proving a menace, hauling back Robben. Must surely be on his final warning.
Dangerous cross from Blind has Robben rising at the back post but he slightly mistimes his jump and heads wide.
Dangerous cross from Mahmutovic, cleared by Van Dijk as Luxembourg threaten the Dutch goal.
POSSESSION: Luxembourg 27% - 73% Netherlands
A good run from Wijnaldum and he lets fly but again it’s straight at Schon.
CHANCE! Robben forces a save from Schon but Sneijder elects not to shoot first time with the follow up, allowing Luxembourg to regroup and the chance is gone.
In comes the Robben corner but cleared just before it reaches Van Dijk.
The rain really not helping with the state of this pitch, which is chewing up pretty easily. A typical Robben run ends in a Dutch corner.
Another foul by Mutsch, this time on Wijnaldum, concedes a dangerous free kick. In it comes from Sneijder but straight at the keeper.
Luxembourg playing with confidence early on. They really have nothing to lose. The Dutch playing in their uncustomary blue away kit, playing with a conventional back four.
Just a single point for Luxembourg so far but they have been competitive in this group. The Dutch need victory to put pressure on group leaders France. Bruma heads tamely into the hands of Schon.
Early foul by Mutsch on Robben, who is deffinitely one to watch tonight on his return to the side.
Heavy rain here in Luxembourg, as there is in Sao Paulo for the Brazilian GP. A little safer here, one would hope...
- 1st Half
KICK-OFF! Referee Anthony Taylor blows the whistle to get us underway here at Stade Josy Barthel.
FIVE MINUTES TO KICK-OFF: The players are in the tunnel and making their way out onto the pitch. Must win game for the Dutch and surely they will do so.
TEN MINUTES TO KICK-OFF
Arjen Robben (via AFP): "We have to go there with the right attitude. It is about winning this game more than anything else, it is as simple as that. Of course, you have to respect your opponent, but let's not overestimate Luxembourg. It might sound strange, but we should not be satisfied with a 1-0 or 2-0 win. We have to put in an intense performance and not allow them to breathe. If we do that, we are capable of getting a good win there.''
Danny Blind (via ESPN): "Luxembourg will be a totally different game (to against Belgium)and it is one in which we will need to be inventive when we have the ball.''
Here's a reminder of how the teams line up tonight.
Luxembourg: Schon; Malget, Chanot, Mahmutovic; Jans, Bensi, Philipps, Bohnert, Mutsch, Da Mota; Turpel.
Netherlands: Stekelenburg; Brenet, Bruma, Van Dijk, Blind; Ramselaar, Wijnaldum, Klaassen; Robben, Dost, Sneijder.
