Former Barcelona legend Xavi believes Louis van Gaal is an “underrated” manager who will bring trophies to Manchester United in the near future.

Van Gaal has presided over an eventful period at United since arriving in the summer of 2014, returning the club to the Champions League but struggling to impose a clear, attractive style of play on the side at the same time.
United are currently two points off top spot in the Premier League without impressing for a sustained period during the current campaign, but Xavi – who worked under Van Gaal as he was breaking into the Barcelona team during around the turn of the millennium - says United are sure of success if they stick with the Dutchman.
“Yes, of course,” Xavi told Eurosport's Pete Burton, when asked about Van Gaal’s trophy prospects. “I think Van Gaal needs time to adapt.
“Last year he had a good season and qualified for the Champions League and he’s going to keep going because he’s a fantastic manager.”
Xavi says the Dutchman’s public perception perhaps does not line up with the reality, saying that the man often so combative in press conferences is a fine motivator in the dressing room.
“I’m very fond of him - he gave me confidence, personally speaking,” Xavi added.
“As a manager he is perhaps underrated, when it comes to the media, but inside the locker room, to the players he’s a great manager.”
Xavi was speaking at a promotional event for Tocball. Visit the Facebook page here.
