Austrian Grand Prix: Unhappy Hamilton, another shoey for Ricciardo
Updated 09/07/2017 at 21:22 GMT
Lewis Hamilton wasn't happy as Valtteri Bottas won in Spielberg.
WHERE THE RACE WAS WON
It wasn't the best of spectacles in Spielberg - the forecast rain that never appeared would have mixed things up a bit. A blistering start from Mercedes's Valtteri Bottas had the stewards checking his reaction times – it turned out it was all fine and he led to the finish. Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel was closing in on him all the time, though, and he said afterwards that he thought he could have overtaken had he had a couple more laps to do it in.
Great racing from Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo, finishing on the podium for the fifth race in a row. And you know what that means…a shoey. Bottas didn't fancy giving it a go, though.
HAMILTON-WATCH
Three stars out of five. Bearing in mind he started in eighth after a grid penalty for a new gearbox, fourth place was pretty good. He wasn't pleased with the result, though - perhaps seeing his team-mate Bottas and his rival Vettel on the podium exacerbated his disgruntlement.
PIT RADIO EXCHANGE OF THE DAY
Kevin Magnussen was not a happy man. His expletives didn’t get bleeped out – if you want to listen to them they’re not hard to find. Suffice to say, he was not a happy man.
Carlos Sainz throwing a hissy fit was pretty good as well, mind.
Not surprising he was miffed – he’d had a great weekend and looked to have the measure of the track.
MOVE OF THE RACE
Everyone was thinking that temporary race leader Kimi Raikkonen might be following team orders on Lap 44, and holding up fellow Finn Bottas to allow Vettel to make inroads on his advantage. But no. Within a lap, Bottas went round his compatriot at Turn 4 and back into the lead after a pit stop.
BEST OVERTAKE
Hamilton did some lovely overtaking today - perhaps it sounds easy, he does have the fastest car - but coming through the packed middle of the field at the start of the race is tough to do. Sweeping past Romain Grosjean into fifth place on Lap 7 was beautifully done.
TACTICAL MASTERSTROKE
Little on offer, but Bottas's reflexes at the start gave him the biggest advantage of the day - and bewildered his rivals, with Vettel and Ricciardo both questioning whether it was a jump start.
UNSUNG HERO
Good work by Haas to get Romain Grosjean into sixth – a really creditable finish. He was justifiably chuffed.
FACEPALM OF THE WEEKEND
When thousands upon thousands of your compatriots have turned up to cheer you on, you don’t really want to crash out on Lap 1. That’s what Max Verstappen did, though, with a clutch problem – and he took out Fernando Alonso with him. Unfortunate for the Spaniard, whose McLaren team thought they'd fixed the engine reliability problems this weekend.
STAR-SPOTTING
Martin Brundle was doing the podium interviews today, not a Hollywood celebrity - but there was an Austrian daredevil in the garage.
