Brazilian Grand Prix: Vettel wins; incredible emotion for Felipe Massa; Romain Grosjean fumes

Sebastian Vettel had a fantastic start, moving into the Senna Ss brilliantly and past pole-sitter Valtteri Bottas.

The lead changed hands a couple of times due to pit stops, but the Ferrari looked strong throughout, jumping to the top of the podium ahead of a brace of Finns - Bottas in second, and the stony-faced Kimi Raikkonen in third.

Max Verstappen had some problems with the balance of his car all weekend, and found those issues returning during the race, losing P4 to the resurgent Lewis Hamilton a dozen laps from the chequered flag. The Dutchman did manage to hold off his team-mate Daniel Ricciardo, though.

Fernando Alonso had a good day, spending much of the afternoon attempting to get past Felipe Massa's Williams, and enjoying the test before ultimately finishing eighth.

Four stars out of five: You've got to admire anyone who can manoeuvre a car from the pit lane to just outside the podium places. The safety car spell after the first lap was perhaps just a bit soon for Hamilton, who'd have fancied his chances had he been able to get through the pack a bit more before everyone else was forced to slow down. He even got to lead for a bit – but only because both Ferraris and the other Mercedes had all taken their pit stop.

Not funny, but incredibly moving. Felipe Massa bade farewell to F1 (again) at his home race, with his proud father and little son watching on. The Brazilian thanked the fans over the radio before the race.

And Massa got plaudits over the radio afterwards too.

(He also got a live microphone and a trip up to the podium.)

Bottas's dash into the pits for his first stop proved an excellent piece of undercutting on Vettel, reducing the gap between first and second to about a car-length rather than the few seconds it had been previously. It made for some good racing.

Daniel Ricciardo might have had a weighty grid penalty, but at least that gives him the chance to show off his overtaking. His Lap 11 lunges past Lance Stroll's Williams and then immediately past Marcus Ericsson's Sauber were beautiful to watch.

After being outsmarted by Mercedes so much this year, Ferrari might have been expected to panic after the Bottas undercut. They did not. They held their nerve, kept to their plan, and weren't worried out of their position.

The Ferrari mechanics, who dealt swiftly with computer problems on the grid that looked like they might hobble Kimi Raikkonen. Everything got sorted out with minutes to spare, although they were probably fortunate that they were not having to keep a more demonstrative driver happy, only the Finn of few words.

Romain Grosjean lost control of his car on Lap 1, and collided with Esteban Ocon, ruining the Force India's record of 27 consecutive finishes. The Haas picked up a time penalty for it, and the Frenchman was fuming.
