Canadian Grand Prix: Alonso angry, Hamilton cruising - and the return of the shoey

Mercedes's Lewis Hamilton made a big dent in Sebastian Vettel's championship lead, followed home by team-mate Valtteri Bottas and Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo.

Where was Vettel, you ask? Good question. He had an eventful race, with his front wing coming off and reporting a damaged floor after impact with Max Verstappen at a frantic, frenetic start - Toro Rosso's Carlos Sainz, Haas's Romain Grosjean and Williams's Felipe Massa also found themselves caught in the chaos which eventually brought out a safety car. That spacing out of the chasing pack allowed Hamilton to cruise away happily with no challengers getting near him.

The Force Indias had a great day, as predicted; Esteban Ocon was going quicker on newer tyres but team-mate Sergio Perez, just in front, didn't shift aside for him despite repeated requests. There may be words exchanged about this later.

Five out of five. He stayed out of trouble and eased his way home, picking up all the records on the way. Not bad for someone who wasn't really under any pressure from any other drivers at all.

Vettel scented blood. He went deep at the side of the track in an attempt to overtake both Force Indias - and only got past Ocon, who got thoroughly confused, veering off before resuming his place in sixth. Terrific battle three laps from the flag.

Did championship leader Vettel want to play it safe? No. He was looking to move up the pack after his disastrous start, and drove brilliantly to get past Perez and seal fourth place.

Ferrari ran a risky strategy with Vettel, stopping him for fresh tyres on lap 49 in the hope it would help him chase down those pesky Pink Panthers. It worked, too - although credit has to go to the driver himself. Not everyone would have been quite that brave in their manoeuvring.

Fernando Alonso hasn't mellowed in his time off. Back in his seat and receiving instructions from the McLaren pit wall, he was unimpressed: "You are not giving me useful information!"

If you're fond of storylines, Williams's Lance Stroll getting points at his home race is a pretty good one. The young man sounded quite tearful over the radio at the end.

Yep, time to insert the standard "McLaren" response here. One and a half laps from the end, Alonso's engine just packed up. He was not a happy man, throwing all his accoutrements off as he lifted himself out of the cockpit - and then promptly went up into the stands to meet and greet fans, which set tongues a-wagging.

Sir Patrick Stewart popped in for a nose round the Mercedes garage - and then did the podium interviews, during which he did a "shoey" with Daniel Ricciardo, and then declared, "I am on the podium for the first time - I will drink out of EVERYBODY'S shoes."

Michael Douglas also pottered about over the course of the weekend.
