Marcus Ericsson will start Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix from the pitlane after his Sauber Formula 1 team changed his chassis.
The Swede crashed at Turn 10 in wet conditions during the first segment of qualifying and after assessing the damage, the team chose to swap chassis as a precaution.
Ericsson, who had a new chassis - number four - this weekend, will use chassis two, which is the one his team-mate Felipe Nasr discarded because of handling issues.
Sauber had conducted analysis on that chassis and found nothing wrong with it so kept it in the pool as a spare.
Switching chassis leads to the penalty of a pitlane start as the car has to be taken out of parc ferme conditions.
"I lost the car, so in the end it was my mistake and the session was quickly over for me," said Ericsson.
"I should have done better. I apologise to the team for the work load I have caused them. I will fight back on Sunday."
Ericsson had been due to start from 20th on the grid before the chassis change.
