Abt grabs pole ahead of Turvey

Daniel Abt secured his second Formula E pole position after a surprising qualifying session ahead of the Mexico City ePrix.

The Audi Sport Abt driver produced a best lap of 1m02.711s in the super pole session at the end of qualifying to take pole - his first in Formula E in almost two years - for Saturday evening's race by 0.156 seconds from NextEV driver Oliver Turvey.

Abt blitzed the first and third sectors of the modified Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez circuit to deny Turvey - who nevertheless secured his second front-row start of the season in the process, having also done so in Hong Kong.

Maro Engel qualified third for Venturi - his best showing since joining the series - but will be shuffled back to 13th, after incurring a 10-place grid penalty for a gearbox change on his Venturi VM200-FE-02 earlier in the weekend.

DS Virgin driver Jose-Maria Lopez therefore inherits third on the grid, and will start alongside Jean-Eric Vergne's Techeetah-Renault on the second row.

The first of the sessions' earlier qualifying groups included runaway championship leader Sebastien Buemi, who seemingly got the worst of the slippery track conditions.

After a slight mistake at Turn 1 the Renault e.dams driver will start a lowly ninth - his worst qualifying performance since Buenos Aires last season.

Lucas Di Grassi was another to have a disappointing session and will start 17th, having been slowest in his qualifying group.

Like Buemi, a slight mistake at the final chicane cost him some time but was left mystified to the deficit from others in his group.

Nick Heidfeld was the fastest of those not to make it through to the shootout session but will start fifth courtesy of Engel's penalty, alongside the second DS Virgin car of Sam Bird.

Adam Carroll equalled his best qualifying in formula E with 14th best time, out-qualifying Jaguar Racing team-mate Mitch Evans by a scant 0.010s.

Esteban Gutierrez will start his first ePrix from 11th.

The third qualifying group was red flagged after Loic Duval clattered his Faraday Future Dragoon entry in to the wall.

As a result the Frenchman will start from the final row of the grid.
