For Germany, France and Denmark it is the second consecutive championship they have made the last eight, having also gone that deep in Spain in 2013.
All three secured relatively comfortable victories, while Poland shocked Sweden to secure their progress.
The Germans eased to a 22-18 win over Egypt with goalkeeper Carsten Lichtlein putting in a star performance with 20 saves. Lichtlein was ably assisted by his defence in front of him, who gave Egypt very few chances to score, while Uwe Gensheimer had six goals to his name.
Olympic champions France ensured their safe passage through with an equally comfortable 33-20 win over Argentina, who were thoroughly outclassed in their first ever last 16 appearance. Thierry Omeyer stood out for the French with 13 saves while Valentin Portes scored six goals.
Denmark, the 2013 finalists, downed Iceland 30-25 to move into the quarter-finals for a fifth consecutive tournament while Iceland went out at the same stage as they did two years ago. Both keepers - Iceland's Björgvin Gustavsson and Niklas Landin of Denmark - made 14 saves each but the Danish victory was built on some solid defending. At the other end, Rasmus Lauge top-scored for the Danes with six, while Gudjon Valur Sigurdsson had the same number for Iceland.
If those results were expected, Poland's victory over Sweden came as something of a surprise. The Poles edged out the Scandinavians 24-20 to match their achievement of reaching the last eight in 2007 and 2009. Poland, even without their injured star Krzysztof Lijewski, proved too strong for the Swedes, who also had injury problems and were missing right-back striker Kim Andersson. Polish brothers Bartosz and Michal Jurecki top-scored with five goals each.
Poland next play Croatia, while Germany meet hosts Qatar for a place in the semi-finals. Denmark clash with Spain in rematch of the 2013 final while France go up against Slovenia in the other quarter-final to be played on Wednesday.
