Roly Poly claimed victory in the Falmouth Stakes whilst Clemmie won the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes to ensure O’Brien and Moore took both big races.
O’Brien’s quest to break the Group 1 record of race winners continued when Roly Poly delivered his 11th top flight victory of the season.
The late US Hall of Fame trainer Bobby Frankel holds the world record of 25 Flat Group 1 wins in a year, and the trainer, who fell two short of the mark in 2001, has three more Group 1 wins to his name than he had at the corresponding stage 16 years ago.
Roly Poly had chased home her stablemate Winter in both the Coronation Stakes and Irish 2,000 Guineas, but seized her chance to secure a Group 1 victory of her own on the track where she won last year’s Duchess of Cambridge.
Moore’s plan to get Roly Poly to the rail from the stalls was executed with the minimum of fuss before the pair made the rest of the running. The pair was unduly troubled as they went on to beat Wuheida by a comfortable length and three-quarters margin, with Arabian Hope third under Josephine Gordon.
That success was backed two races later when Clemmie stormed to victory in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes.
Emulating her stablemate Roly Poly 12 months ago, the race favourite had come straight from winning a Group 3 at the Curragh just 12 days previously and impressed many including her part-owner Michael Tabor and winning jockey Moore.
O’Brien’s filly really began to get a head of speed up the further she went, reeling in front-running Nyaleti on the climb to the line to win with some ease by a length and three-quarters.
Day 3 and the Final Day of Newmarket’s July Meeting tomorrow (Saturday) will see all eyes on the Darley July Cup Stakes, due off at 4.35pm, in which O’Brien and Moore will be highly fancied to be in the winning enclosure again and add another Group 1 success with Caravaggio.
