The Capitals scored three unanswered goals and got 29 saves from Braden Holtby to rally past the Panthers.
Alex Ovechkin, Brooks Laich, defenseman Karl Alzner and rookie right winger Andre Burakovsky scored goals for the Capitals (20-11-7, 47 points) who passed the New York Rangers for third place in the Metropolitan Division standings.
The Panthers (17-11-9, 43 points) lost for the third time in four games and finished the contest without goaltender Roberto Luongo who exited after a first-period collision with Ovechkin.

Hurricanes 2, Bruins 1 (shootout)
Carolina center Eric Staal scored in the shootout and goaltender Anton Khudobin beat his former team.
Khudobin denied all three Boston shooters and has now stopped 13 of 15 shots in shootouts in his career.
Boston (19-15-6), which managed just two third-period shots and one in overtime, lost its fourth straight shootout.
