March 5 (The Sports Xchange) - Defenseman Kimmo Timonen confirmed Thursday that he intends to retire after the season.

The 39-year-old veteran was dealt from the Philadelphia Flyers to the Chicago Blackhawks at the trade deadline last month for two draft picks. After the season, he will become an unrestricted free agent.

Timonen ranks third among active NHL defensemen in points with 571 in 1,092 career games with the Flyers and Nashville Predators spanning 16 seasons.

Florida Panthers goaltender Roberto Luongo will miss the next two games due to an upper-body injury.

The Panthers said Thursday they hope to have Luongo back by March 12 to face the Winnipeg Jets.

Toronto Maple Leafs forward Richard Panik has been fined $2,000 for diving/embellishment.

The NHL announced the punishment Thursday after a citation was issued by the league's operations department, which tracks all games, logs all penalties for diving or embellishment and flags plays not called on the ice that may deserve such a penalty.

The Buffalo Sabres recalled forward Mikhail Grigorenko from the Rochester Americans of the American Hockey League.

Grigorenko, 20, joins the Sabres for the fifth time this season. He has recorded a goal and an assist in 12 games. In Rochester, he has appeared in 39 games, tallying 11 goals and 21 assists.

The Boston Bruins signed forward Justin Hickman to an entry-level contract.

Hickman, 20, has spent the previous five seasons with the Seattle Thunderbirds of the Western Hockey League.

The Washington Capitals recalled center Andre Burakovsky from the Hershey Bears of the American Hockey League.

Burakovsky has played in 48 games with Washington this season, registering 21 points (12 assists) and 10 penalty minutes. The Malmo, Sweden, native made his NHL debut on Oct. 9 against Montreal and scored his first goal in the first period.

The Anaheim Ducks recalled forward Chris Wagner from Utah of the East Coast Hockey League a day after sending him to the minor league team.

The 23-year-old Wagner has played in three games for Anaheim this season and is scoreless with two penalty minutes.
